IBM, the IT services giant, has developed software that harnesses information from social media platforms to help companies communicate better with customers and suppliers.

IBM’s Connections software, which will go on sale in the third quarter, uses microblogs, and wikis, to help organisations “track and trace” social media data.

The adoption of social software is on the rise and rapidly becoming a vital business tool, including marketing, IBM says.

IBM cited research by Gartner, which predicted that by the end of 2013, half of all companies will be forced to produce material from social media websites.

Alistair Rennie, general manager for collaboration solutions at IBM says: “The benefits of social business are too great to ignore.

“With these new advancements … a social business can confidently activate networks of people to use a variety of collaborative tools, to improve and accelerate innovation.”
