Independent inks first album distribution deal

The debut album from The Mongrels, a new Wall of Sound signed act led by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers, is to be distributed free with The Independent tomorrow (March 7).

The album ‘Better than Heavy’ will be the first ever debut to be promoted via a newspaper giveaway. It follows Prince’s move to giveaway his 2007 Planet Earth release free with the Mail on Sunday.

McClure says he struck the deal, brokered by Independent deputy editor Ian Birrell, to ensure it is seen to the ‘widest possible audience’ and is aligned with a paper that chimes with his views on Iraq, the environment, race and immigration.

“This move gives the widest possible platform to artists whose voices could otherwise be ignored and gets the music onto CD players across the land, and also calls into question the values of the recorded music industry,” says McClure.

The band, which features former members of The Arctic Monkeys and Baby shambles, is signed too Wall of Sound.
