Interpublic Group (IPG) has scooped Intel’s $300m (&£160m) global advertising and media accounts, heralding the first major win for the group’s new chief executive Michael Roth.

Last year IPG’s Initiative Media lost Unilever, while Universal McCann bade farewell to Nestlé.

The Intel business moves from Havas’ Euro RSCG Worldwide and Media Planning Group, which pulled out of the review in January.

McCann Erickson has been appointed to handle the computer chip manufacturer’s ad business, with Universal McCann taking over media planning and buying duties.

Intel began a secret preliminary review in May last year, as exclusively revealed in Marketing Week (May 27, 2004).

The review followed Intel’s hiring of a new vice-president in charge of global marketing. In March last year, Don MacDonald took over as vice-president and director of worldwide branding and campaigns from Pam Pollace.

The formal process started in October when Samsung executive Eric Kim was appointed vice- president and director of sales and marketing at Intel.
