Associated Newspapers’ This is London Website (www.thisislondon.co.uk) has been voted Site of the Year and best online publication at this year’s Yell UK Web awards held last Thursday.

The award represents a double whammy for the site, based around the Evening Standard newspaper title, which in May picked up the Grand Prix and best consumer publishing awards at the New Media Age Effectiveness Awards.

New media agency Syzygy beat off rivals AKQA and Online Magic to be named Best Web Design Agency of the year, while EMAP Online’s online ticket shop Aloud.com won the Best Entertainment Website award.

Yell’s Best Commercial Website award was made to Mathmos (www.mathmos.co.uk), the Covent Garden-based lava lamp producer and retailer for a Website with a “very quirky Sixties feel that perfectly captured the branding of the product”.

But the judges failed to make an award in the category of online banner advertising. According to Phil Dwyer, managing director of Jupiter Communications and a judge for the awards: “The judges did not feel that the standard of entry was good enough to qualify for an award.”

With that sort of cachet, such a product could surely dispense […]

The tooth about the Get Real actor

Most of us assume out-of-work actors earn a crust by waiting on tables, doing the odd voiceover and so on. Lynne Nathan, secretary to Martin Bowley, the chief executive of ITV sales house Carlton Sales, knows better. Actor Simon Godley, one of the stars of Carlton TV’s latest comedy Get Real, fills in his spare […]
