John Lewis most ‘influential’ British brand

John Lewis is the highest new entry in a list of the most influential brands in the UK.


The TLG annual index of UK Business Thought Leaders ranks the retailer below Apple and Google, which take the top two spots respectively.

Compiled by YouGov and Populus, the study polls 1,000 key opinion formers to rank their top innovative and trusted companies.

John Lewis chairman Charlie Mayfield says the brands new entry in the list is due to its unique “partnership” business model, where all its 69,000 staff share its profits with management.

The company, which includes the Waitrose supermarket brand, has enjoyed a sales boost of 11% this year, raking in £3bn.

Elsewhere in the list the Co-Op brand takes two spots in the top ten, with the Group brand listed at number eight and its Co-Op Bank division at number nine.

Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Innocent – a new entrant in the list – and Twitter make up the remainder of the top ten.

British brands that have dropped in the list include Marks & Spencer, which has fallen to number 11, and Virgin Atlantic, which has fallen to number 12.

BP, blighted by controversy over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, has fallen out of the top twenty completely, after being ranked at number nine two years ago.
