Le Shuttle hires new sales chief

Eurotunnel, parent company of Le Shuttle, has appointed Eric Barrois as European sales and marketing director for Le Shuttle Tourist, the company’s passenger operation.

Barrois, former sales and marketing director for Budget Rent A Car France, joins with a brief to boost passenger numbers. His responsibilities will cover continental Europe and he will report to Le Shuttle managing director, Bill Dix.

Le Shuttle is seeking to increase business as cross-channel competition hots up in the shape of the recently-merged P&O Stena Line. The company also faces the abolition of duty-free shopping in 1999, which will reduce its revenue.

Dix says: “Barrois has proven strengths in marketing services in the competitive car rental business.

“We look to him to increase our business from the continent by gaining market share from the ferries and creating new business.”

In February, the company announced that it was restructuring its marketing department and recruiting a marketing and sales director for the UK and continental Europe. The UK marketing and sales director has yet to be appointed.

GGT currently handles the 6m UK account for Le Shuttle, while DDB Paris handles business on the continent. However, the account is up for review on both sides of the Channel as Eurotunnel looks for a strategic partner agency to lead a cohesive approach across Europe.
