Leave popular television alone

I usually find Iain Murray’s columns very entertaining, but take exception to his pompous opinions about the British viewing public, “Don’t call me stupid, stupid” (MW May 17).

Lighten up Iain – what’s wrong with a bit of entertaining TV? Aren’t we allowed to have a some fun occasionally? If it was up to him, all we would be allowed to watch would be Mastermind and the Open University.

Personally, I would rather spend my leisure time with a few cans of beer watching the compulsive Blind Date or its successor, the majestic Man o’ Mano.

Popular TV brings more happiness into the world than any “serious” programme, about politics for example, ever can. What’s the point of spending umpteen hours interviewing evasive, self-promoting politicians, when everyone knows they’re not going to answer the question asked – why bother wasting television time? If politicians were told before they came on that they wouldn’t be allowed back if they didn’t answer the questions asked, we might see a change in attitude.

Anyway, leave our populist TV alone. Life would surely be much more miserable without the humour of Eurotrash, Coronation Street, and Supermarket Sweep.

Let’s face it Iain, if the media became solely a place to educate and never entertain, you’d be out of a job wouldn’t you?
