‘Lesbian kiss’ ad under the ASA spotlight

Despite ditching its FCUK logo, French Connection’s new ad campaign, featuring a “lesbian kiss”, is under scrutiny from the Advertising Standards Authority.

The Beattie McGuinness Bungay ad – the label’s first TV and cinema push for two years – has immediately attracted a number of complaints to the ASA after breaking last weekend.

The execution features a violent martial arts-style fight between models representing fashion and style. At the end of the ad, the couple literally kiss and make up.

⢠The ASA has rejected complaints about an anti-smoking ad in the regional press that claimed NHS services were “four times as effective” in helping people give up. The complainant said hypnotherapy is more effective than the NHS in helping smokers quit. The ASA has ruled it is obvious that the Abbott Mead Vickers.BBDO ad compared the NHS service to will-power alone.

⢠Another government ad, created by Delaney Lund Knox Warren & Partners for the Department of Education, has also been cleared. The ad promotes loans to pay tuition fees. There were complaints that they were misleading about interest charges, repayment options and education costs in general.
