Luminar readies Karaoke brand to boost fortunes

Nightclub operator Luminar Leisure, owner of the Oceana and Liquid brands, is to launch an in-club Karaoke brand as it continues to try and revive its struggling business.

The “Go Go Karaoke” brand, a partnership with karaoke firm Lucky Voice, will launch first in Luminar’s “flagship” Oceana club in Milton Keynes ahead of a possible wider rollout.

The move is the latest attempt by the nightclub owner to boost visitor numbers, hit by rising youth unemployment and the increasing number of late night bars.

Earlier this year, it signed a deal to run Jongleurs comedy nights in its clubs. It also agreed a partnership with Ministry of Sound to run club nights at some of its venues.

Luminar sales dipped 20.2% in the 26 weeks to 26 August. Admission revenue slid 26.5% and customer numbers dropped 19.1%.

In a statement, the company says that the Karaoke initiative forms part of its “ongoing strategy to add value to our customer’s experience and ensure they have a great time at our venues.”

Luminar owns 75 nightclubs in the UK. In addition to Oceana and Liquid, it owns the Lava and Ignite brands.

Luminar’s forthcoming new “super club” in Norwich will also incorporate a ’Go Go Karaoke’ offering.
