Manchester looks set to win the battle to be the site of the UK’s first "super casino" in a bitter blow to Blackpool and Greenwich.
The Casino Advisory Panel (CAP) – the body sifting through the dozens of applications from UK local authorities – has today recommended Manchester as the site of the first giant casino to Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Blackpool and Greenwich had both argued fiercely for the right to host the super casino which will have a minimum floor area of 5,000 square metres. It is not yet known whether the two councils will challenge the recommendation.
The CAP has also put forward a list of local authorities where it thinks the eight large and eight small casinos permitted by the Gambling Act 2005 should be located.
The panel says large casinos should be licensed in: Great Yarmouth; Kingston-upon-Hull; Leeds; Middlesbrough; Milton Keynes; Newham; Solihull and Southampton. It further recommends that small casinos should be licensed in: Bath and North East Somerset; Dumfries and Galloway; East Lindsey; Luton; Scarborough; Swansea; Torbay and Wolverhampton.
