Marketing Birmingham seeks agencies for tourism push

Marketing Birmingham, the body charged with promoting England’s second city, is seeking agencies for a campaign to boost leisure tourism in the city. The aim is to encourage more people to come to Birmingham and stay for longer when they are there.

The campaign is being developed under the banner “Visit Birmingham” and aims to bring together the different aspects of the city’s lifestyle.

Marketing Birmingham is planning to run ads across press, outdoor, literature and film over the next 12 months. The money will come in part from the European Regional Development Fund.

The organisation is looking for integrated creative agencies and a media agency.

The campaign will complement the redevelopment of Birmingham’s official tourism website, visitbirmingham.com, following the appointment of local digital agency TAK!

Marketing Birmingham marketing director Dave Hodgson says the work will build on previous lifestyle campaigns, including the Birmingham Bites initiative.

He says: “The focus of our work remains the same. We need to improve perceptions in order to move the city forward. When people come here they love what they find. This campaign is about building on existing messages and persuading more people to visit.”

According to Marketing Birmingham, over 30 million people visited Birmingham in 2006, and brought £2.5bn into the local economy.
