Duffy is leaving the NMA at the end of this year to take up a role outside the newspaper industry, although the trade body did not confirm the company she will be working at.

Following Duffy’s resignation, the NMA is launching a transition group, led by Adam Freeman, executive director of Guardian News and Media, which will explore the future role of the NMA and commence the search for Duffy’s successor.

The day to day running of the NMA will be handed over to Mike Wood, managing director in the interim.

Paul Hayes, chairman of the NMA and News International Commercial managing director, says: “Under [Maureen’s] leadership, the NMA has played a key role in transforming advertisers’ perceptions of national newspapers, to the benefit of all its members. We will take this opportunity to strategically examine how newspapers market themselves in a new multi-platform world.”

Duffy has been the CEO of the NMA since its foundation in 2003, when it was set up to promote newspapers as a powerful advertising platform to brands and agencies.

The NMA is funded by Guardian News and Media, Independent Print Limited, Mail Newspapers, Mirror Group Newspapers, News International and Telegraph Media Group.
