McCann Erickson has won the £10m Evening Standard advertising account following a competitive pitch. It is understood to have pitched against a number of undisclosed agencies, which is thought to include incumbent agency The Law Firm.

The pitch, which was overseen by the AAR and head of marketing Charlie Edelman, was called at the end of May. It is part of a move to halt declining sales of the paper, which has come under increasing pressure since the launch of the afternoon freesheets, thelondonpaper and London Lite.

It raised its cover price from 40p to 50p just before the introduction of the freesheets and its six-month average circulation has dropped by 18% during the past year to 268,262 copies, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations figures.
