Michael Jackson’s death overwhelms entertainment sites

UK internet visits to entertainment website TMZ increased twenty-fold yesterday after it broke the news that Michael Jackson had died, according to Hitwise.

Sites including AOL-owned TMZ, Twitter and Perez Hilton’s site broke under the amount of traffic increased yesterday evening as the news spread worldwide.

TMZ was the 73rd most visited website in the UK yesterday, up from 1,457th the day before, accounting for one in every 1,100 internet visits, reported Hitwise.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said, “We saw over twice the normal tweets per second the moment the story broke as people shared their grief and memories.”

The official Michael Jackson site also saw visits increase 17-fold to make it the ninth most visited music site yesterday, sitting just behind the Glastonbury website.
