Microsoft and LG sign mobile technology deal

Microsoft and LG Electronics have signed a deal that will see them collaborate on mobile technology. The two companies intend to align their mobile strategies in the face of growing competition in the sector.

The agreement will see the two companies work together on research and development, marketing, applications and services in converged mobile devices. The alliance, which was signed during Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer’s trip to South Korea, means the companies will “define and align” their mobile strategies.

The move will also strengthen the brands’ offering in the smartphone category amid fierce competition from operating platforms such as Android and Symbian.

Meanwhile, LG’s rival Samsung Electronics is launching the domestic version of its Omnia touch screen handset, which is based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. The model, which launches today (November 3), will be available from mid-November under an exclusive deal with mobile operator SK Telecom.

Microsoft is hoping its Windows Mobile operating system will continue to challenge Symbian – a platform backed by handset maker Nokia and used in two-thirds of smartphones.
