Mirror follows News International to block NewsNow

The Mirror Group has become the latest publisher to take action against NewsNow by preventing the news aggregator from linking to Mirror.co.uk content.

According to PaidContent, Mirror Group activated the block yesterday, following an identical move made earlier in the month by rival publisher News International for The Sun, News of the World and Times Online content (nma.co.uk 12 January 2010).

Both publishers have been critical of news aggregation sites and search engines which display their content free or without compensation, saying it devalues the quality of their news.

Times Online will introduce a paywall this spring, with the same model understood to be being considered for other titles.

In last month’s ABCE rankings The Mirror saw strong growth over the period (4.78%) but remained the sixth most popular UK news site with 10.6m unique users.
