Morrisons grabs 6.5m new customers

Morrisons attracted 6.5m new customers in the first quarter boosting sales by 5% over last year.

The UK’s fourth biggest supermarket group says the growth is providing the basis for its expansion from ‘national’ to ‘nationwide.’

It opened two new stores in the 13 weeks to May 3 and is on schedule to open two of the stores it acquired from the Co-op and Somerfield next month.

Its investment in price cuts and expanding its fresh food ‘market street’ appeal has been central to winning new customers, chief executive Marc Bolland says in a statement.

“This is a particularly good result which is on top of the similar level of growth we reported in last year’s Q1 Update,” he says.

Last week TNS grocery market share figures showed the supermarket is growing the fastest compared to its top four rivals Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s.
