M&S partners with councils to boost recycling

Marks & Spencer is partnering with four local authorities in a bid to improve kerbside recycling and help councils collect more recycling.

Through the partnerships, M&S plans to help councils recycle an additional 60,000 tonnes of material from six million people every year by 2015 – the equivalent of what M&S produces in food packaging each year,

The retailer will invest £1.25m in the initiative over five years as part of its ongoing Plan A. The investment will mean Somerset County Council can introduce plastics and cardboard to the recyclable materials it collects across its five district councils.

M&S is in talks with three other councils about similar partnerships.

The partnerships will mean 15,000 tonnes of packaging waste will be diverted back into food packaging and reused by M&S with the remaining 45,000 tonnes sold to other packaging producers.

Earlier this week M&S launched a Home Energy Service division that will offer customers a suite of energy efficiency products and services.
