News Corp looks at launching e-reader division

News Corp is considering launching a digital news business targeting users of e-readers such as the Kindle and iPad, according to reports.

The business will leverage News Corp’s recent acquisition of e-reader platform Skiff and the stake it bought in start-up business Journalism Online.

Sources close to the deal have said News Corp will make a decision in the coming weeks on whether to launch an organisation producing paid-for news content exclusively for e-readers.

The company is said to be pondering the move following its reported success in getting people to sign up to its premium iPad apps for its titles such as The Times – which sold 5,000 subscriptions in three days – and The Wall Street Journal.

News Corp-backed Journalism Online recently announced that 1,500 UK publishers had agreed to sign up to its paid-content platform (nma 22 July 2010).
