Painter recently led The Times and The Sunday Times marketing team on an interim basis. The role has now been filled by Alex Lewis who was previously director of marketing for BSkyB channels.

He takes over from Kathy McAllister, who had previously taken on the interim role following the departure of Roland Agambar. The latter this year moved into the new position of chief marketing officer for rival Associated Newspapers.

Painter will report to NI chief executive, Rebekah Brooks.

McAllister, a former BBC marketer, is leaving the company to return to Ireland.

Painter will later return to his role as NI portfolio, strategy and planning director where he has responsibility for developing opportunities that span across all NI titles.

Meanwhile, the publisher this year saw the sudden departure of chief marketing officer Jeremy Schwartz. There are no immediate plans to replace him. The role had been created in June of last year.
