NI marketing faces further shakeup after Schwartz quits

News International’s senior marketing team is undergoing more upheaval with the resignation of recently appointed chief marketing officer Jeremy Schwartz.

His departure comes as the hunt continues for a permanent marketer for The Sun.

Schwartz, a former L’Oreal and Sainsbury’s marketer, is not thought to have a job to go to. News International has no plans to replace him in the near future.

The CMO post was created in June last year to oversee the marketing of the group’s national newspapers when the commercial, marketing and managing operations of News Group Newspapers and Times Media were merged.

Schwartz’s departure now means the marketing director for The Times and The Sunday Times and the marketing director for The Sun and News of the World will report to News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks. Brooks took up the chief executive role at the beginning of this month; she was previously editor of The Sun.

News International’s marketing positions have been in flux since former sales and marketing director for The Times and Sunday Times, Katie Vanneck, left to become interim managing director of digital and new business last October. She has since been promoted to managing director of customer direct.

The company has recruited BSkyB marketer Alex Lewis to take up The Times position. She joins later this month.

Marketing director for The Sun, Roland Agambar, left the newspaper publisher at the same time Schwartz was appointed and joined Associated Newspapers as chief marketing officer.

Former BBC marketer Kathy McAllister is overseeing marketing for The Sun and News of the World in the interim while the company recruits a marketing director.
