Britannia is recruiting three senior marketers following a shake-up in the marketing department. The group is integrating marketing for its life company and building society. The moves follow Mike Kirsch’s appointment as head of group marketing.

PepsiCo has launched 7-Up Ice Cola into the Netherlands and is considering introducing the product in the UK. The drink is 7-Up with a cola taste.

JD Wetherspoon, the pub chain, has appointed Suzanne Baker director of marketing. The post has been vacant for more than a year. The chain is developing a new identity, which includes no-smoking areas in all its pubs and a “no music” policy (Last chance saloon, page 35).

Henkel sales and marketing director for home improvement and adhesive products Rob Jenkins, known as “Mr Pritt”, is to retire in September. He will be replaced by Mike Rayner, currently a DIY national account manager.

National Westminster Bank is to provide a home banking service through cable TV. The project will be tested in Cambridge, and is jointly developed with systems integrator Online Media.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing has appointed George Bull as vice president. He is currently group chief executive at Grand Metropolitan.

CCSB’s 1995 Soft Drinks Market Profile indicates that the British soft drinks sector grew by 4.7 per cent in 1994 and is now worth £6.2bn. The cola sector grew by 14.2 per cent to take a 17 per cent volume share of soft drinks grocery sales. (Non-cola war, page 11)

Hagen-Dazs is launching Hagen Dazs Baileys (ice cream flavoured with Baileys liqueur) next month, with extensive product sampling sessions and a national poster and radio campaign through Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

The Tobacco Products Labelling Bill, sponsored by Labour MP Terry Lewis and backed by MPs from all parties, will be debated in the House of Commons on Friday. It includes a proposal to have a warning printed in the centre of a rectangular area covering at least 25 per cent of the packet. Although the measure could receive a second reading, it is unlikely to make much progress without support from the Government.
