Mirror Group and ITV are in stalemate over ITV’s refusal to broadcast ads promoting the Mirror’s Big Break game card promotion (MW last week). Mirror Group is understood not to have pushed further its threat of legal action. Carlton UK Sales managing director Martin Bowley says ITV still has no intention of screening the ads (Mirror Group, page 37).

Tobacco companies yesterday accepted a new voluntary agreement on tobacco-sponsored sports events. The move cuts tobacco companies’ expenditure on promoting a sponsored event from 20 to 15 per cent of total sponsorship expenditure. Health warnings on promotional materials are to be increased by 20 per cent.

Carlsberg-Tetley has appointed a new development director, Tom Wright, who joins from Anchor Foods, where he was group marketing manager.

Goodyear Great Britain has appointed Ron Pike advertising manager, following the retirement of Mike Powell, who had been with the company for more than 40 years.

William Grant has appointed a new general manager for blended scotch whiskies. Jean Crawford will be responsible for the marketing and development of William Grant’s blended whiskies and Clan MacGregor.

BT is to advertise on apples, to highlight its cheap-rate calls to the US. Stickers carrying the slogan `Core! 40p a minute to the Big Apple’ will appear on Cox’s apples distributed to US companies in the UK, and US passengers arriving at Heathrow.

The Telephone Preference Service, launched this month, offers consumers the chance to add their names to a master list of numbers of people who do not wish to receive unsolicited telesales calls.

The prosecution of Interactive Telephone Services, organiser of the Telemillion quiz game (MW January 6), was adjourned last week. The case will next appear in court on February 17.
