Gary Leih, chairman of Ogilvy Group UK, has been appointed to the worldwide board of Ogilvy & Mather.

The appointment comes just over a year after Leih joined the UK group from Ogilvy Africa, where he was group managing director.

Since moving to the UK agency, Leih has focused on restructuring the group to integrate its 11 operating companies, including direct marketing agencies OgilvyOne and 141, and improve its domestic new business record. It won the £50m easyJet business in May and has also scooped pan-European accounts including Chiquita bananas and Avis.

Leih has worked at a variety of agencies during his career after joining Ogilvy Cape Town in 1980. He later became group account director at the agency’s Johannesburg office before leaving to launch advertising agency The White House. He moved to Australia in 1994 to work at The Campaign Palace and Batey, and later launch brand consultancy, Publi Image. The agency was acquired by TBWA in 1999 and Leih was appointed as managing director of TBWA Sydney. He returned to Ogilvy Africa in 2001.
