One Direction to launch headphone range

Boyband One Direction are following in the footsteps of new friend Justin Bieber as well as Dr Dre and Tinchy Stryder by launching their own headphones range.

A selection of 1D-branded microphones, walkie talkies, alarm clocks, karaoke machines and stereo systems are also set to become available later this year.

The range has been licensed by US toy maker and consumer electronics company Jazwares.

It will soon launch in the UK, US, Latin America, Ireland and Canada. Details about which retailers will stock the branded electronics have not yet been released.

The former X Factor finalists have built up a huge fanbase since coming third in the TV talent show in 2010. The band has more than 3 million Twitter followers and has sold more than 2.7 million albums worldwide.

Predicting the band’s mass appeal, Nokia partnered with One Direction last year to product an exclusive phone personalised by the members of the group with screensavers and ringtones.

Simon Cowell’s record company Syco Music created a multi-platform international campaign to promote One Direction’s first single last year, positioning the band as a household brand.

Earlier this month UK rapper Tinchy Stryder partnered with Dixons to launch a range of headphones for PC World and Currys, aiming to emulate the success of Beats headphones, which was founded by rapper Dr Dre and Interscope Geffen-A&M Records chairman Interscope.

Celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and LeBron James have also partnered with Beats to create their own custom range of headphones in recent months.
