One in five still posting data

Three years after HMRC’s major data loss, 19 per cent of companies are still using couriers to send large or sensitive data files.

According to a survey among 238 IT security professionals by Cyber-Ark, there has been a decline in the proportion sending data via email, from 35 per cent in 2008 to 16 per cent now.

The software vendor challenges the adoption by 67 per cent of FTP for data transfers. “The problem arises after data has moved while it sits on the FTP or SFTP server. The service is directly connected to the internet leaving it open to violation, and as there is no audit trail, no record of who accessed the files,” says Mark Fullbrook, UK director for Cyber-Ark.
