Online gas firm Amerada expands into electricity supply

Amerada, the UK online domestic gas supply company, is to offer electricity as well.

Customers can start registering for electricity next week through the company’s updated website, but the supply of electricity will not begin until the start of next year.

The website is also offering &£250 worth of free gas to consumers in a competition that will run until the end of October.

Amerada will support the move with a press advertising campaign.

Earlier this month, the company launched a press, radio and outdoor brand building campaign in the north of England. It also sponsors Carlton TV’s London weather report.

Amerada marketing manager Jenny Brownlee says: “From a gas company, we are now an energy company. We would now include offers like dual fuel for our consumers”.

The company has 400,000 customers and claims to offer the cheapest gas among online suppliers, which include npower, Centrica, Servista and Powergen.

Amerada was the first independent gas company to enter the domestic market when competition was introduced in 1996.

Before deregulation, it supplied gas through British Gas, now called Centrica.
