Pete Markey leaves Aviva for TSB marketing director role

Pete Markey is taking up a new role at TSB, having previously held senior marketing positions at Aviva UK and the Post Office.

TSB has appointed Pete Markey as its new marketing director, taking over from Andrew Gillespie, who previously held the role on an interim basis.

Based in London, he will be responsible for developing and driving forward TSB’s marketing and brand strategy. Markey will lead a team of more than 40 people in London and Bristol and report to CMO Nigel Gilbert.

Markey joins TSB from Aviva UK where he was brand communications and marketing director responsible for managing Aviva’s multi-million pound brand.

Prior to this, he worked at the Post Office for two years as the chief marketing officer looking after its full range of products and services, such as mails, telecoms, mobile, financial services and insurance. He was also chief marketing officer at RSA Group, marketing director at MORE TH>N and head of marketing operations at Centrica.

Commenting on the appointment, Gilbert says: “It’s nearly four years since we launched TSB as Britain’s challenger bank, and in that time, we’ve become the most recommended high street bank in Britain, we’re growing, and more people than ever are considering TSB as a bank worth switching to.

“As we continue to drive this momentum, I am really thrilled to bring Pete on board. With all of his rich experience, Pete will play a major role in the next phase of our marketing and brand strategy.”

Markey adds: “It is a really exciting time to join TSB as it continues to challenge the UK banking sector and I can’t wait to get stuck in.  I’ve been impressed with how the bank has established its personality within the sector, and in my new role, I’m looking forward to helping evolve the brand as TSB grows.”

It is unclear whether Aviva will replace Markey. When approached for comment, a spokeswoman says: “Following changes to Aviva’s UK marketing team, Pete Markey left Aviva at the end of April to pursue new opportunities. Pete has made a valuable contribution to our marketing and brand performance over the past year and we would like to thank him for all of his work since joining the business and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
