Planet Hollywood is taking on the Hard Rock Café with the launch of an international music-themed restaurant chain.

The plans were revealed this week by Planet Hollywood boss Robert Earl. He says the music-themed chain – which has yet to be named – will open its first outlet in London. The city is widely considered to be the world’s pop music capital.

The new chain is likely follow the successful formula used for Planet Hollywood and will be backed by top music stars.

Earl says the format will then be exported to the US, and that a 40,000 sq ft site has already been found in New York’s Times Square. But he gives no details of a London site or when it will open.

Earl was the original founder of the Rank-owned Hard Rock Café chain, but left and later set up Planet Hollywood with investment and backing from some 40 movie stars.

Planet Hollywood’s latest UK venture is the launch of its All Star Café format, which already has five branches in the US.

Planet Hollywood is fronted by sporting stars such as golfer Tiger Woods and tennis players André Agassi and Monica Seles.

Planet Hollywood’s New York office confirms it is developing plans for the music chain, but declines to give further details.
