Plastic fantastic from Somerfield
The Diary has always had a soft spot for supermarket chain Somerfield. After all, it rescued Kwik Save when no other company would – and where would the Diary be without its morning visit to the Liquor Save cider aisle? And where would Soho’s tramps be without a steady supply of Somerfield carriers in which to deposit their “refuse”?
Well, now those tramps can go about their business with a clear conscience – Somerfield has become the first UK supermarket chain to introduce biodegradable plastic bags, and to celebrate the initiative, it ran a competition, challenging fashion students at Manchester Metropolitan University to design carrier-bag clothing.
Here, then, is model Catherine McQueen wearing the winning entry – designed by 20-year-old Paul Green – and giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “bag lady”. That background doesn’t look much like Manchester, though.
