Premier League denies roadshow will include exhibition games
The Premier League has denied that it is to organise a series of exhibition matches between England’s top sides as part of its proposals for a touring roadshow.
Reports have suggested that the ‘Premier League Park’ concept, which aims to promote the championship worldwide, could include up to eight exhibition games a year to be played around the world.
However, a spokesman for the Premier League denies the roadshow will include any games.
“The Premier League categorically denies that playing exhibition matches has ever been part of this concept,” he says.
The Premier League, in particular the so-called “big four” clubs – Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal – already enjoy huge popularity around the world, particularly in South East Asia and India.
Premier League champions United recently opened a branded café in India and are currently on a pre-season tour of Asia.
Last year, the Premier League floated the idea of a 39th game to be played outside the UK to take advantage of the league’s global popularity but the idea received a hostile reaction.
