Radio 1’s Moyles to exit

Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Chris Moyles is to step down from the show he has presented for eight years.

Moyles

Moyles, the station’s longest serving breakfast show presenter, will be replaced by Nick Grimshaw, a specialist DJ on Radio 1’s night time offering. He also presents T4 on Channel 4 at the weekend.

Moyles told listeners on this morning’s show: “We’re off. I wanted to let you know. A couple more months of us, then it’s someone else’s turn. Thank you for listening.”

The 39-year-old, who calls himself the “saviour of Radio 1” has been criticised in the past for being out of touch with the station’s young audience.

The BBC Trust aims to attract more listeners under 30 and has recently made changes to the schedule to bring younger presenters on board. It has seen stalwarts such as Gilles Peterson move to BBC 6Music.

According to the latest Rajar figures, Moyles’ breakfast show has 7.10 million listeners, but it is overshadowed by Chris Evans’ Radio 2 show which has 9.23m.

Moyles, who previously presented the drive time show, remains contracted at Radio 1 until 2014 and is said to be in talks with the BBC about hosting a new show.
