The joint venture between the BBC and commercial radio stations, including Absolute Radio and Global Radio, launched earlier this year. Its launch marked the first collaborative effort by the radio industry aimed at increasing online listening via a standardised player.

Radioplayer listeners can now listen to music from within Facebook, while sharing their favourite programmes and chatting to friends.

They will also receive recommendations based on their Facebook friend’ listening preferences.

Radioplayer managing director Michael Hill says: “Less than 6 months ago, we put UK radio in one place on your computer. Now we’re showing 30 million UK Facebook users that radio is a perfect companion while you’re chatting with friends,” he said.

Earlier this year radio bosses hailed the “instant impact” that Radioplayer had after revealing it attracted 5.7 million users in May.

Radioplayer worked with developer Folder Media, technology specialist Unique Interactive, and Media UK on the Facebook app.

The radio aggregator is also eyeing mobile phone and tablet roll-out, and is also a content advisory partner to YouView.
