Radioplayer readies tablet launch

Radioplayer is to launch iOS and Android apps specifically designed for tablets this year as research from Adobe demonstrates that users of such devices generate more online traffic than smartphone users.

The online radio hub, backed by UK commercial stations and the BBC, is poised to launch both versions of the app in “early summer” according to Michael Hill, managing director of Radioplayer.

Hill says the planned app will “focus on discovery” and won’t just be a bigger version of its existing smartphone apps for iOS and Android. “Our research shows that people spend more time [consuming content] on their tablets compared to any other device,” he adds.

Earlier this week, Adobe published a research study of global internet traffic showing that tablet users generate more internet traffic than smartphone users as of December last year.

The study examined 100 billion web visits across 1,000 sites, finding tablet usesr generated 8 per cent of traffic compared to smartphone users who generated 7 per cent, see chart above.

Tyler White, manager and primary analyst at Adobe Digital Index, says: “We’ve been keeping a close eye on how quickly tablets have taken off. Just a year ago in January we uncovered that visitors using tablets spend 54 per cent more per online order than their counterparts on smartphones, and 19 per cent more than desktop/laptop users.”
