Sainsbury’s launches first in-store app

Sainsbury’s is the first UK supermarket to launch an app that lets customers scan items as they shop using a smartphone and pay at the till using a QR code.

Sainsbury's launches in-store shopping app

Customers can use the ‘Mobile Scan & Go’ iPhone or Android app to scan item barcodes using a smartphone camera as they go around the store. It will then track how much they have spent.

Shoppers can then pay as normal using a QR code at the till without having to unload items through the check out.

Sainsbury’s has stolen a march on rivals Tesco and Asda, which have also talked about similar initiatives.

The app is linked to the Nectar loyalty scheme allowing shoppers to collect loyalty points and redeem coupons at the same time. It also paves the way for increased personalisation of offers targeted directly to customers phones as they shop.

It will roll out across Sainsbury’s stores following a trial launching this week at three stores. Feedback on the trial will help shape the future roll out of the service.

Stores included in the trial are convenience stores in London’s Bethnal Green and Clerkenwell and a supermarket in Tadley, Hampshire.

It will be promoted through in-store marketing at participating stores and email communications targeted at local shoppers.

Luke Jensen, Sainsbury’s group development director, says: “We’re always looking for ways to enhance the shopping experience for our customers. Our innovative Mobile Scan & Go technology is fantastic for those wanting to manage their budget or simply those who want a quicker in-store experience.”
