Sainsbury’s to double click and collect service

Sainsbury’s plans to double the size of its multichannel click and collect service in a bid to boost its non-food and online business.

The supermarket currently offers customers the ability to order non-food items online and collect them in stores the next day at more than 300 locations.

It will extend this to 400 stores in June and double it to 800 locations, including supermarket and convenience stores, by the end of the year.

Sainsbury’s says its click and collect service accounts for one third of its online non-food sales.

Earlier this month Sainsbury’s revealed that its non-food business is growing at three times the speed of its food business and that its online groceries channel is growing at 20%.

Helen Buck, Sainsbury’s director of convenience, says Click and Collect will play a “crucial role” in the supermarket’s future growth strategy.

Sainsbury’s launched its non-food online website in July 2009 and offers more than 15,000 products.

The supermarket reported a 9% increase in underlying pre-tax profit to £665m in the 12 months to March 19, and a 7% rise in sales to £22.9bn.
