Sky customer numbers soar

BSkyB added 462,000 new customers in its last financial year, which helped boost revenues by 7%.

The pay-TV broadcaster says net customer growth in the 12 months to June 30 was the highest in five years driven by “very strong” demand for its high definition service. The broadcaster now has 9.4m customers, 1.3m of those have its Sky+HD service.

Adjusted revenue increased to £5.3bn last year, up from £4.9bn a year earlier, which helped push pre-tax profit up to £456m from just £60m last year.

Jeremy Darroch, chief executive, says the company’s focus on “high-quality content and product innovation” means the long-term outlook is positive.

“We see a substantial opportunity ahead for our business. Our focus on the customer and our growing capability as an organisation positions us well to build a more profitable and durable business for the long-term.”   

Sky and ESPN recently agreed a £65m three-year deal with the Scottish Premier League to broadcast live Scottish football. .

The two will also split coverage of the English Premier League after the US broadcaster acquired the rights previously held by Setanta last month.
