Somerfield takes on rivals with new Website

Supermarket chain Somerfield is to launch a Website in June, in response to the growing number of online services from retail rivals.

The site will offer a variety of consumer information and interactive entertainment, as well as corporate information aimed at raising the Somerfield brand.

It is being launched in response to sites already operating by rivals, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer.

The supermarket chain declines to give more details on the site ahead of launch, but confirms that there are no initial plans to offer grocery home shopping facilities through the service.

The launch comes as Tesco plans to further roll-out its Internet-based home delivery service to Lea Valley and Romford postcodes in London, as well as an extension to the area covered by its existing service in Hammersmith.

Site design is being handled by Information Hyperlink, which has already handled the launch of sites for book retailer Waterstone’s, several law firms, and online recruitment service The Appointments Section (TAPS.com).
