Sony Ericsson is planning to boost the appeal of its range of Walkman music products with the launch of an entry-level phone handset that holds just 37 songs.

The W200i, which goes on sale in the spring, also features a radio and a digital camera but is likely to be priced at the cheaper end of the music phone market. Sony Ericsson has sold more than 15 million Walkman phones since reintroducing the Walkman brand in August 2005 with the launch of the W800i handset.

The company’s vice-president of product marketing Steve Walker says: “The W200i is an affordable music phone that complements your existing MP3 player. Not everyone wants to carry lots of devices and with the W200i people have enough storage for their existing playlists.”

W200i users will be able to upgrade the handset with a 1GB memory stick that can hold up to 255 songs.

Last October, the company launched a service that allows users to watch local TV shows on their mobile phones wherever they are in the world (MW October 19, 2006).
