Sony looks at taking on iPad in tablet market

Sony is looking to launch a competitor to Apple’s iPad, its chief financial officer hinted yesterday.

Speaking at press conference for the electronics company’s quarterly results, Nobuyuki Oneda hinted at plans to move into the tablet computer market, following Apple’s iPad launch last month.

“That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a product,” he said at the Tokyo news conference.

He admitted that Sony, which does sell ebook readers, is lagging behind its rival.

“Time-wise we are a little behind the iPad but it’s a space we would like to be an active player in,” he added.

Apple’s iPad offers content from publishers such as the New York Times and Penguin Books (nma 28 January 2010). At its launch Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, “The iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

The iPad will be available in late March for a reported $499 (£310) for the 16Gb wi-fi-only model, $599 (£370) for the 32Gb model, $699 (£430) for the 64Gb model.
