The move will allow premium subscribers in the UK, France, Spain, Finland, Norway and Sweden to download Spotify for free from the App Store.

The Spotify blog said, “Spotify on the iPhone will include many of the features our users enjoy on the desktop, with the added advantage of letting you listen to your playlists even when you haven’t a network connection, for instance when on a plane or the Underground.”

The app’s approval comes despite speculation by industry observers that Apple may block the app because of fears it will cannibalise iTunes’ sales of digital downloads.

new media age revealed Spotify’s plans to create an iPhone app in March, when the service launched a hunt for mobile app developers for the iPhone, Google Android and the more common S60 operating system (nma 19 March 2009).

Spotify is also in talks with 3 to distribute its mobile app to the operator’s 4.4m subscribers, which could see the app preloaded onto new 3 handsets (nma 6 August 2009).
