Sting in the tale of Winner’s calls

The Diary has received a letter from the office of film director Michael Winner concerning the diary entry “Call CLK and you’re really on to a Winner” (MW November 3).

The piece said that Winner’s phone number was just one digit out from that of brand specialists CLK, and the famous film director had been angered by receiving a number of calls for the company.

But Winner’s partner at Scimitar Films, one John Fraser M.A. (Oxon.), M.Phil, says The Sunday Times columnist has never answered the phone in that office in his life, and is very seldom in it.

Fraser waxes: “We are well aware that truth is not a high point in the life of journalists. If it is there at all. Your article is a typical example.”

The Diary could not agree more – research shows that journalists are held in even lower public esteem than opinionated film directors who double as restaurant critics. And Fraser concludes: “Mr Winner wonders if the rest of your paper is as ‘inventive’ as this.”

The Diary – cut to the quick – is considering tendering its resignation as a result.
