Stubbs takes on new role at CIM

Marketing Council head John Stubbs has been named chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Marketing in a new, though reduced role.

Stubbs takes on the position following the acrimonious departure in February of CIM director-general Steve Cuthbert. Last month, Cuthbert and the CIM agreed to settle out of court following a legal dispute.

The former director-general’s responsibilities, which included running the CIM and handling the institute’s external profile, will be split.

As chief executive, Stubbs will manage the institute’s core activities of training courses, membership services and conferences. Responsibility for raising the CIM’s profile will pass to chairman John Edmund.

A spokesman says: “It follows the recognition that [the role] was too much for one person.”

Stubbs, who helped to set up The Marketing Council in 1995, will continue as chief executive in the short term.

He was previously deputy head of marketing at Unilever. Prior to joining Unilever in 1987, he was head of J Walter Thompson’s African and Middle Eastern operations.

Edmund says: “Stubbs’ experience at The Marketing Council makes him the ideal person to contribute to the intensive programme of analysis and action which will shape the CIM’s future.”
