Teen website plans offline magazine launch for girls
Online teen magazine Wickedcolors is launching an offline publication aimed at 11- to 17-year-old girls.
The magazine will be available from May through the website and as an insert in teenage magazines, such as Sugar, before being launched as a standalone publication towards the end of the year.
An editorial panel of 12 girls is being selected from the site’s 100,000 members. They will be invited to contribute articles and ideas for the magazine through a special section on the website.
Wickedcolors marketing manager Lucy Laverack says: “The magazine will be very member-led, just like the website. We are looking at a monthly publication to start with and the cover price will be lower than other magazines, such as Sugar and Bliss.”
The magazine will also have a mail order section featuring selected items of jewellery, accessories and make-up from the online shop.
Wickedcolors, which was set up last year, is also considering expanding overseas to achieve its target of 250,000 members by the end of 2001.
Earlier this year the company launched Generation W – a panel of 12 girls who voice their opinions on issues and concerns of teenage girls in the UK. The panel’s views are then given to the media and government agencies.
Two teenage girl portals, Unilever-backed Wowgo and Excite’s Swizzle, closed last year, leaving the Sky-backed Mykindaplace website as Wickedcolors’ main UK rival.
