The Telegraph Group is poised to call a review of its &£5m buying account, held by Universal McCann since 2004. It is understood that the review is at an early stage.

AAR are likely to handle the review, which is believed to have been called as part of a cost-cutting drive. Last year the group axed around 17 per cent of its 1,500-strong staff, including marketing and advertising sales, to fund a &£150m investment in new colour presses.

It is not clear if the review will extend to media planning, which is currently handled by Naked Inside, the joint venture between Naked and the group’s creative agency Clemmow Hornby Inge.

The Daily Telegraph, still the UK’s best selling “quality” daily, saw sales fall to 897,385 in December according to Audit Bureau of Circulations figures – an 0.8 per cent drop year on year. In the same period, the Sunday Telegraph fell 6.5 per cent. Both titles have been revamped in the past three months.
