Industry ‘Sprintathon’ almost full as Tesco, Camelot and Just Eat sign up

Nearly 80 brands, agencies and media owners have put forward a team for the popular competitive event to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer.

The Marketing Society’s ‘Sprintathon’ event next month is now 75% full, as the industry rallies together to raise money for cancer research at the first in-person competition since the onset of Covid-19.

So far 75 brands, media owners and agencies have put forward a total of 79 teams for the event, with recent additions including Camelot, British Gas, BT, Just Eat, Lloyds Banking Group, Channel 4, Giffgaff, Tesco and Virgin.

Teams from these brands will join those from Boots, Direct Line, Eve Sleep, Mars and NatWest in the competition.

Hosted in partnership with Cancer Research UK and Direct Line Group since 2016, this year’s Sprintathon has been described as the “de facto welcome back” for the industry after 18 months of Covid-19, lockdowns and working from home.

“At Boots, we’re excited to be part of this year’s Sprintathon raising vital funds to help beat cancer, a cause we’ve been supporting for many years,” says Boots CMO Pete Markey.

“We’re also looking forward to reconnecting with the wider marketing community on what is sure to be a fun and rewarding day.”

During the two-hour event, 105 teams of four will each complete a relay of 400m (100m per person) back-to-back until they collectively cover 42.2km, the distance of a marathon. Previous years have collectively raised £500,000 for charity.

There will also be a competitive element to the event, with each team competing against one another for the fastest lap.

This year’s Sprintathon is the first hosted by The Marketing Society and marks the return of the event after a year off, as the pandemic prevented marketers from coming together in person in 2020.

The money raised will be split between The Marketing Society, where it will help support marketing’s rising talent, and Cancer Research UK’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign, where it will fund life-saving research.

The Sprintathon will take place on Wednesday, 15 September at Battersea Park running track. The cost to enter a team is £1,000 plus VAT – sign up now via the Marketing Society website. The Marketing Society rallies industry to raise money for cancer with ‘Sprintathon’
