The bare-faced cheek of the poster nickers

The promotional campaign for an upcoming play at the West Yorkshire Playhouse is certainly attracting attention, but maybe not of the kind that the theatre would ideally like.

The play is the story of the infamous lothario Casanova but, in a twist to usual interpretations of the story, the titular protagonist is being played by a woman.

The posters the Playhouse is using to advertise the play, which runs from September 7-19, recreate photographer Martin Ellis’ 1976 “Tennis Girl” image with a woman in period costume. The trouble is, when the theatre opens in the morning it has become a regular occurrence that the poster that was put up the previous day has gone the way of the others before it – it’s been stolen.
