The Independent is to raise its weekday cover price from 80p to £1 and its Satuday edition by 10p to £1.60. The price hike follows that of quality rivals The Times and the Daily Telegraph last week.

Independent News & Media will introduce the paper’s new price on Monday (September 15), and makes the Indy’s weekday edition the second most expensive daily newspaper behind the Financial Times, which earlier this year raised its cover price by 20p to £1.50.

Last month The Sun raised the price of its London and South East edition to 30p, but shaved 5p off the cover price for editions outside the capital, making it the same nationwide.

And earlier this year, Associated Newspapers increased the Daily Mail’s cover price by 5p to 50p, leading Northern & Shell-owned Daily Express to proclaim on its masthead “10p cheaper than the Daily Mail and ten times better”.
