Alexander Lebedev bought The Independent and The Independent on Sunday from the company Independent News & Media last week for a nominal £1.

Advertising agency Beattie McGuinness Bungay has now been appointed to develop the marketing campaign. The communications will focus on truth and objectivity in news reporting.

The sale means that Ivan Fallon, chief executive of Independent News & Media UK retires from the group. A new CEO is yet to be announced and speculation surrounds the editor’s position, currently held by Roger Alton.

The Independent launched in 1986 with the well-known advertising strapline “It is. Are you?”
