The Marketing Week – 9/11/2012

Welcome to The Marketing Week, your guide to the good, the bad and the downright bizarre marketing highlights of the last seven days.

CAMPAIGN OF THE WEEK

It has been the most eagerly awaited Christmas campaign, and this morning John Lewis finally unveiled its festive offering.

The department store is hoping to bring to life its take on ‘thoughtful giving” through a snowman love story this year. It will have a hard time beating the incredible response last year’s ad received – have marketing director Craig Inglis and agency adamandeveddb cracked it again?

A GOOD WEEK FOR…

Women in marketing

The Chartered Institute of Marketing held its third annual Women in Marketing Awards this week to celebrate some of the great women in our industry and their work.

The evening was organised by the indefatigable Ade Onilude, marketing consultant and creator of the awards, and hosted by Daryl Fielding, former Kraft vice president of marketing who pulled off just as good a performance as last year’s ad hoc effort.

Boots chirstmas ad

Boots CMO Elizabeth Fagan has been particularly busy this week launching her brand’s new positioningand Christmas ad campaign.

She was also awarded with the outstanding contribution to marketing from a client side while Kate Robertson, group chairman of Havas UK and co-founder of One Young World, took the accolade agency side.

BT group marketing and brand director Suzi Williams took two gongs for her work on BT’s London 2012 sponsorship activity – one for being the best female consumer marketer and another for her leadership.

A BAD WEEK FOR…

Asda

asda

Asda’s Christmas advertising campaign has attracted all the wrong kind of attention this week. CMO Steve Smith was probably hoping that the supermarket’s first emotional Christmas ad campaign would evoke a different set of emotions. Despite a lot of support from its customers on its own Facebook and Twitter pages, the ASA has received more than 160 complaints that the ad is sexist and offensive.

STATS OF THE WEEK

  • 89.33% – Google’s share of the UK search market dipped below 90% for the first time in five years this month.
  • 90 – Dixons expects to sell 90 tablet devices and e-readers every minute in the UK during the last week before Christmas.
  • 50% – half of consumers using online hotel review sites say they are influenced by the reviews they read and more than a third says their decision is is changed.
